It’s party time! Join me and friends in Brooklyn to celebrate the launch of my new book 1 Page at a Time. Comedian Kate Berlant will perform a set, followed by a dialogue about “design for good” with superstar designer & art director Jessica Walsh. Free booze & I can sign your book maybe.

OAK: What are you most looking forward to about the release of 1 Page at a Time?
AJK: On October 8th I am going to take a very long, deep breath, then let it out very slowly. I’ve been really anxious because the book is so personal. It’s full of my own mantras and ideas, and you know, if people hate the book then it’s obviously personal and I should take it to heart and let it ruin my life…
Did a cool little interview & studio tour with OAK that’s up today. We talk about what it’s like to live and work in the same space, fall weather in NYC, plus naps and candy. Thanks to Conor Riley & Jorge William Concha!

You guyssssss! I have been on tumblr since the logo was a flower, since before the rise and fall of “Tumblarity,” since before the community was what it is, and definitely before Radar. I’ve been on tumblr since 2007 and it has led to some crazy opportunities, including the book deal for 1 PAGE AT A TIME.
To have my book photographed by stephaniegonot, who I discovered through tumblr, and then have her image featured is so exciting to me. Every part of this book release process is so fucking exciting!

I make a whole lot of tangible products through my INTERNET GIFT SHOP and they’re all really personal and pretty literal. But just in case, here’s a brief backstory to a handful of items, from a letter I sent recently.

Did a cool interview for the Call It Spring zine, online now and in ALDO stores this fall! Thanks to Ben Pobjoy & William Joos.
Here’s a question I liked:
Can you tell us how the internet and its memes make in to your work?
I think we’re all trying to balance the internet and real life, to varying degrees of success. I think the internet and meme culture is rapidly shaping language, it comes with its own humour and understanding, and also informs the way we digest words and images. Bold, outlined type carries an obvious meaning. I napped my way through media studies courses, but there’s probably some good “medium is the message” stuff here.

Uhh, I get what you’re feeling and it totally sucks and I agree and I don’t mean to belittle it at all but it’s been three months and you’re taking care of yourself and doing what you need to do so now it is simply time to stop this. Have one last pity party and then CHEER THE FUCK UP.

Today marks the 30 day countdown until 1 Page at a Time is released by perigeebooks (Penguin Random House) here in the United States!
I’ll be posting something daily as we count down, including some of my favorite pages completed by myself and others. Here’s my own page 54. A fitting start to what should be a fun, if not obsessive, month of posts.

The absolute hardest part of working on 1 PAGE AT A TIME: A DAILY CREATIVE COMPANION was choosing a title. I wanted to be weirder and stupider (my top pick was “THIS IS JUST PAPER,” obviously) but Marian Lizzi, my amazing editor, was like “uhh, that is not a helpful title.” We struggled to find the balance between the true optimism and goal of the book, and the total sarcasm and self-deprecation of its voice (so, my actual voice). We sent each other a lot of emails.
Ultimately we picked 1 PAGE AT A TIME, which I must have somehow known early on. My working folder during the process was called “1 BOOK AT A TIME.” It was meant as a note to myself not to freak out, that this is just a book, people make books all the time, I just need to focus on this one thing and get through it. It became my own mantra (it’s a pretty common one), and it’s in the spirit of the book itself.
1 PAGE AT A TIME is about slowing down. It’s about realizing that days are like pages, there are more to come. 1 year of pages ends up being about an inch thick, so it is substantial… but there are a whole lot of books in the world. There is always more (if you want it).
The book gently (and not gently) pushes you through this year, gets you writing about past, present, and future, facing your fears and then turning the page. “Write CAUTION on this page repeatedly, then throw it to the wind!” It’s just paper, it’s pencils and pens, you have all the tools, you’re a tool too, and boom, we just got through a whole year.
If you haven’t pre-ordered yet, that’s okay. You can today, or tomorrow. If you do before October 7th, you’ll get an award ribbon bookmark, a 4x6 sticker to make your copy into an actual calendar, and another thing just from me to you.
Here is more information, with links to some stores carrying the book.

This week’s post has put me at the 3-year mark in my week in scraps project!
One little change, I’m going to start uploading images at twice the size so you can snoop on the details a little bit better. This week’s is the first where you can click-through and read menu prices and that sort of thing.
